How To: Shawl

I often hear preconceptions about vintage and thrift store clothing. My favorite one: ‘these clothes have bad karma’. But if you're still on the adequate side of humanity and would like to add at least a few things to your closet, I would suggest you start with shawls! This is probably the safest way to go.

If you are already a queen of thrift shopping, don't rush to give up reading this article. I'm sure there's something useful for you, too!

A shawl is an absolutely multipurpose accessory that can complement any look. I know that sounds like advice from your mom's friend, and you're reminded of Audrey Hepburn's character from "Charade."

Please don't jump to conclusions. The shawl is a super up to date accessory with lots of different styling options. I just adore them and want to share some options with you.

1. Tie on a bag

I'm not going to tell you about America here, because Hermès has been selling their famous Birkin and Kelly bags with a twillie scarf wrapped around the handles for a long time. But I would suggest another option. Spray your favorite perfume on a shawl that compliments the colors of your outfit, tie it at the base of the bag straps and let it flutter beautifully in the wind, leaving behind a trail of your fragrance.

2. Inspired by Serena Van Der Woodsen

Pretty often, the characters from your favourite TV series become iconic. So in anticipation of the Gossip Girl reboot, I would suggest you get a little inspiration from Serena’s style . Just roll up a shawl and tie it around your head.

P.S. Don't rush to repeat all her outfits, wait for the reboot, I'm sure there will be something new and inspiring to look at.

3. The bright accent

This method is perfectly suited to add color to a monochrome set. You can tie it over your jeans like I did in the photo, or over a skirt or a straight monochrome dress if you want to accentuate the waist.

4. Back to the 90's

Use a small silk scarf instead of a cotton bandana and add this accessory to your regular outfits. However, it would look especially good with jackets and leather (Read Mariann's article about leather).

All the shawls in the photo are from the Ludovika vintage store. I hope you got a dose of inspiration and are ready to go hunting as soon as the restrictions are lifted.
